Marching Band Membership

Membership in the Mountain View Marching Band

The Marching Band at Mountain View High School is a competitive performing arts and music education organization dedicated to the development of musicianship and performance artistry in each of its members.  While musical development is our primary goal, membership in the organization also encourages self-reliance and helps to promote a positive self-image in each student, through which they may gain greater self-esteem.  Members will gain a greater understanding of team work, sportsmanship, civic pride and contributions of one's personal best to a group effort. These lessons are learned through a musical and marching activity in which there is a blending of the arts and athleticism.

The Mountain View Marching Band participates in competitions and music festivals throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and is an extension of the music education program at Mountain View High School.  The band is fully supported by the Stafford County Public Schools and by the administration of Mountain View High School.  In addition, the Mountain View High School Band Parent Association, which is a non-profit corporation formed specifically for encouraging and supporting the band program at Mountain View High School, provides financial and logistical assistance to the ensemble.

Most of the band’s performances take place in the central Virginia area.  The high point of our marching season centers on the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s Association (VBODA) Marching Performance Assessment, which evaluates member bands on high standards of performance and awards ratings based on the musical and visual performance of each band.  The band will travel outside of the central Virginia region each spring to participate in festivals and performance opportunities in order to observe new trends, standards and expectations for performance in other regions of the country.

Membership in the Mountain View Marching Band is open to MVHS students who share and display a willingness to work hard to achieve mutual success. A positive attitude and strong work ethic is more important to our success than talent alone and these attributes will be stressed in every rehearsal.  Our program has been established to supplement the music education experience our members receive during the regular school day, not to replace it.  All student musicians are required to be enrolled in a performing music ensemble class at Mountain View High School.

All marching band members are expected to maintain high academic achievement throughout the school year.   The Mountain View Marching Band encourages a culture of high expectations and high achievement for every member.

Nearly all of the band’s instructional staff members are music education professionals and degreed musicians.  This group of adult musicians works to guide the student members to a greater understanding of the rigorous work required to become an outstanding musician and a contributing member of a superior performing group.
